Storm Damage

I got an email from our renter...a tree had fallen on the house. At first I just saw the one in the yard. But two trees fell and one hit the roof dead on. Fortunately nobody hurt but it looks like we will have some major repairs needed to the rafters and roof.

It's silly but seeing what I still consider as my house all banged up sent me into an emotional tailspin. It's a material object and insurance should restore it good as new, but it still holds so many memories for me.

Signing with a builder to have it built was my first real adult act and for 17 years it hosted friends and family gatherings.

So now we start a new unfamiliar journey. Navigating the insurance adjuster and finding contractors to get it restored. It will then be time to put it onto the market again and hopefully hand it off to a new family that can build their own memories there.

How sad to see your home so damaged. I am so glad no one was hurt. Best of luck with your refurbishing.

It is sad that this happened, especially since the house looks great, with the surrounding trees and all. Unfortunately, it also opens up the chances of the house being hit by said trees. It might be a good idea to trim or cut down some of the trees that are in danger of hitting the house should they fall.

Shame that it got damaged during the storm. The trees might be hazardous, but you can’t help but think about the ambiance that will be lost, not to mention the shade and clean air it provided you for all those years. Maybe a trim of the more protruding big branches wouldn’t hurt, but cutting them down might be too drastic. You can’t un-cut a tree, after all.

I'm sorry that your house took such a hit after that storm! My home once sustained serious water damage in New Jersey, so dealing with the insurance the the ensuing mess is something I empathize with. Best of luck restoring the property and getting it back on the market!

Being surrounded with trees sounds refreshing but can be dangerous at the same time. Be thankful that it was just roof damage; no more, no less. Maybe you can trim some branches of the trees to avoid this from happening again. Taking care of your roof is not only about giving it regular maintenance, but it also includes awareness of potential threats that might damage your roof anytime.
